“Shrek” was launched to great acclaim on May 18, 2001. It was a financial hit, generating $484 million internationally on a humble budget of $60 million.

3. Shrek The Third (2007)

The third installment in the Shrek film series, 2007’s “Shrek the Third,” was well-received by critics. Box office receipts for the film were $813.4 million, placing it among the top four highest-grossing movies of 2007. This film was up for Best Animated Film at the 61st British Academy Film Awards.

“Shrek The Third” was hailed for its emotional core and wit, and new cast members include Justin Timberlake as Arthur Pendragon and Eric Idle as Merlin.

As the story progresses, Prince Charming hatches a plan to depose Shrek and Fiona, who had inherited the kingdom in the wake of King Harold’s passing. In “Shrek Forever After,” our charming green ogre Shrek has grown bored of being both a family man and a star. While celebrating his kid’s first birthday at a restaurant in Far, Far Away, he experiences a sequence of embarrassing misfortunes that lead him to lose his cool and lash out at Princess Fiona.

Lucky for Shrek, he runs across Rumpelstiltskin, who gives him a day to pretend he was never born so he may relive his glory days. The day, however, becomes more difficult and frustrating than planned as Shrek is forced to face the grim truth of what the world would be like if he had never been born.

The rest of the ensemble, including Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy, all returned from the first two films, and Walt Dohrn made his debut in the role of Rumpelstiltskin.

Puss in Boots (2011)

After making his debut in Shrek 2, the sidekick Puss in Boots received his film in 2011. The protagonists of Puss in Boots were the namesake cat, Humpty Dumpty, and Kitty Softpaws, a cat burglar. After Puss is falsely convicted of bank robbery, the gang sets out to clear his name by tracking down a golden goose.

The Puss in Boots actors did a great job providing voices for the characters. It didn’t do anything new, much like the other Shrek films after Shrek 2. The plot was engaging, and the visuals were striking and eye-catching. It’s not connected to the Shrek series in any meaningful way, but it can hold its own.

The Adventures Of Puss In Boots (2015)

In 2015, there was a Puss in Boots TV series. After accidentally disclosing San Lorenzo’s hidden riches to the world, Puss’s mission in The Adventures of Puss in Boots was to safeguard the town. Though the plot and characters aren’t particularly complex, the show provides positive themes for its young viewers and some funny moments. Although a different voice actor is used for this series, Puss in Boots retains his recognizable tone and personality.

Unfortunately, neither the plot nor the characters advance in The Adventures of Puss in Boots, and the animation is rough even for a TV show. Even though DreamWorks has already proven how much they can achieve with this character and the Shrek series, the spin-off falls pretty short of expectations.

However, viewers gave Puss’ escapades an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest in any spin-off or sequel. The series aired from 2015-2018 for a total of 78 episodes.

Scared Shrekless (2010)

As Halloween approaches, Shrek and his pals can think of nothing better to do than listen to terrifying tales. As Lord Farquaad’s castle of Duloc lies in ruins, Shrek, Gingy, Pinocchio, Donkey, Puss, the Three Little Pigs, and the Big Bad Wolf all sneak inside to take turns narrating horrifying stories.

“The Bride of Gingy,” “Boots Motel,” and “The Shreksorcist” are the titles of the three short episodes. Their plots sound like adaptations of more well-known horror films like “The Bride of Frankenstein,” “Psycho,” and “The Exorcist.” Viewers were terrified by this miniseries, as it received a 63% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Will There Be A Shrek 5?

Many think that Shrek 5 has been canceled. The release of Shrek 5 has not been canceled, and it is still scheduled for May 20, 2023.

When Shrek 2 was a smashing hit in May of 2004, producer Jeffrey Katzenberg disclosed that the tale of Shrek had been planned into five films nearly from the start.

The script for Shrek 5 has been finished for a long time, thanks to the labor of the same writer who gave us such hits as Boss Baby and other Dreamworks films. While Michael McCullers has talked briefly about the franchise in appearances for his other successful series, he hasn’t revealed much information on the series’ narrative.

According to his comments in the same interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the script still has a special place in his heart. This is especially true considering how many people involved in its development will have likely moved on.

It’s fantastic that Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz, who has been waiting a decade for this opportunity, have committed to appearing in a new Shrek film once a script is completed. The latest statements made by Mike Myer are wonderful news for Shrek 5, and while they don’t reveal a release date for the upcoming Shrek movie, they do suggest his excitement for revisiting the saga “every year” if he could.
