List of All Fast and Furious Movies in Order (Plus Ranking and Box Office): With Fast & Furious 9 around the corner (rescheduled to the first quarter of 2021) you may want to re-watch all Fast and Furious Movies released so far. But do you watch them in order of release (which we often suggest) or is there a better way to watch it?
We know from the Star Wars example that release order and chronological order can be completely different. In the case of the Fast and Furious series, the two are pretty much the same. That is, except for The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006). You probably want to watch that one between Furious 6 (2013) and Fast & Furious 7 (2015). The main reason would be that Han dies in Tokyo Drift, yet he magically re-appears in Furious 6.
It’s crazy when you think that the first movie was released way back in 2001, almost 20 years ago, and the series is still ongoing. Of course, the franchise went through some changes. The first three movies are focused on Illegal street racing, while later on the franchise starts to transition toward heist action with explosions and insane scenes, mission impossible style. Also, a lot of new characters have been added (Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Jason Statham being the major ones).
Besides the 8 movies in The Fast Saga, there are also two short films and the Hobbs & Shaw spin-off. Anyway, here is the list of all Fast and Furious movies in order of release:
1. The Fast and the Furious (2001)
Genre: Action, Crime, Thriller
Director: Rob Cohen
Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster
The first installment in the franchise takes us inside the world of illegal street racing. Well-known street racer Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his crew are under suspicion for a string of truck robberies. The FBI and LAPD send officer Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker) to infiltrate Toretto’s crew and confirm that he is the one doing the robberies. However, O’Connor starts to like this new world of the underground street racing circle, his new friend Toretto, and especially Toretto’s sister Mia. He will find himself in a difficult situation where he needs to decide whether he is a cop or Toretto’s friend.
Crew: Dominic Toretto, Brian O’Conner, Letty Ortiz, Mia Toretto (+ Jesse, Leon and Vince)
Main Antagonist: Johnny Tran
Turbo Charged Prelude to 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)
Genre: Short, Action, Sport
Director: Philip G. Atwell
Starring: Paul Walker
This is a short six-minute film that was supposed to be a connection between the first and the second movie in the franchise. So, it takes place after The Fast and The Furious and details events before 2 Fast 2 Furious. Brian O’Connor is on the run from the police (because he helped Toretto to escape). After being involved in several underground street races, he ends up in Miami, where 2 Fast 2 Furious takes place.
2. 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)
Genre: Action, Crime, Thriller
Director: John Singleton
Starring: Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, Eva Mendes, Cole Hauser
This is the part without Vin Diesel and the rest of the cast from the original movie that played his crew. It is the sequel to the first movie, but also kind of a standalone movie. Brian O’Conner is now a fugitive cop who ends up in Miami. When caught by the police, he is offered a chance to clean his criminal record by going undercover again. This time he is teamed up with his childhood friend ex-con Roman Pearce (Gibson) and Customs Service agent Monica Fuentes (Eva Mendes) to take down the Miami drug lord. All of those skills acquired in the street racing circuit will come in handy.
Crew: Brian O’Conner, Roman Pearce, Monica Fuentes (+ Tej Parker, Suki, Jimmy)
Main Antagonist: Carter Verone
3. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)
Genre: Action, Crime, Thriller
Director: Justin Lin
Starring: Lucas Black, Sung Kang, Shad Moss
Tokyo Drift is a lot of things at the same time. It is the third movie in the franchise, but also a standalone movie. Since it was not possible to return the original cast in Tokyo Drift, this was supposed to be an entry in the franchise but ended up being chronologically between Furious 6 and Fast & Furious 7.
The story follows a high school car enthusiast Sean who keeps getting into trouble because of his involvement in illegal street races. To avoid prison after the latest race, he ends up in Tokyo to live with his father. There he will discover a different way to race called drift racing. In the underworld of Tokyo, guided by Han, Sean finds himself in the dangerous world of Yakuza.
At the end of the movie Vin Diesel makes a cameo appearance, which was a sign that the original cast is about to come back.
Crew: Sean Boswell, Han Lue, Twinkie, Neela
Main Antagonist: Takashi
Los Bandoleros (2009)
Genre: Short, Action, Drama
Director: Vin Diesel
Starring: Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Sung Kang

Genre: Action, Thriller
Director: Justin Lin
Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Gal Gadot

Brian O’Conner now works for the FBI and Dom returns to Los Angeles after the news that his girlfriend Letty was assassinated. While O’Conner must infiltrate a drug cartel as a driver to take down their boss Braga, Dom will do the same to find Letty’s murderer. Brian O’Conner and Mia Toretto rescue Dominic Toretto during transportation to prison. They all end up in Brazil where they meet former crew member Vince. After a train heist goes bad, the owner of the car stolen from the train, the crime lord Reyes, wants his car back. The end of the road begins. Fast X, the tenth film in the Fast and Furious Saga, launches the final chapters of one of cinema’s most storied and popular global franchises, now in its third decade and still going strong with the same core cast and characters as when it began. Over many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family have outsmarted, out-nerved, and outdriven every foe in their path. Now, they confront the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced: A terrifying threat emerging from the shadows of the past who’s fueled by blood revenge, and who is determined to shatter this family and destroy everything everyone Dom loves, forever. In 2011’s Fast Five, Dom and his crew took out nefarious Brazilian drug kingpin Hernan Reyes and decapitated his empire on a bridge in Rio De Janeiro. What they didn’t know was that Reyes’ son, Dante (Aquaman’s Jason Momoa), witnessed it all and has spent the last 12 years masterminding a plan to make Dom pay the ultimate price.
