List of DC Extended Universe Films (Release Order, Ranking, and Box Office): DC Extended Universe films are more standalone compared to Marvel Universe. So far, there have been eight movies in the DCEU series. The first one was Man of Steel from 2013 and the latest released is Birds of Prey.
Wonder Woman will be released in October 2020 and the franchise will continue with Zack Snyder’s Justice League, The Suicide Squad, The Batman, and Black Adam in 2021. Scheduled for 2022 are The Flash, Shazam! 2, and Aquaman 2.
Here is the list of currently available DC Extended Universe films in order of release:
1. Man of Steel (2013)
Sometime before planet Krypton is obliterated, a child is sent from there to Earth and he assumes a completely new identity. He becomes Clark Kent but will soon learn of his innate powers and his destiny to save the world. A general from Krypton has set his eyes on destroying mankind and there is no one else but Superman to stop him.
The film is the first part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
2. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
The existence of Superman is brought into question after the damage Metropolis has suffered. Batman shares the opinion with the masses – that Superman is dangerous and that everyone would benefit from doing without him. He takes on himself to get the world rid of Clark Kent’s alter ego while another villain, Lex Luthor, plots his evil scheme to take over the world.
The film is a sequel to Man of Steel (2013) and part two of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). This was the first time a live-action film featured Batman and Superman together on screen as well as a live-action Wonder Woman.
3. Suicide Squad (2016)
The government’s secret agency forms a squad made of incarcerated criminals with special powers whose task is to inspect and terminate an unknown but highly dangerous force threatening to wipe out humanity. A successful mission will grant them a shortened jail sentence, but if they fail, the responsibility will be their own. On top of everything, each of them gets a bomb inserted in their necks which will be a sombre reminder of what awaits them in case they decide to escape.
The film had its spin-off in 2020 named Birds of Prey with Margot Robbie and will have a sequel, The Suicide Squad, in 2021.
4. Wonder Woman (2017)
When a pilot crashes into an isolated island, he will come face to face with no other than the princess of the Amazons, a woman named Diana, who will decide to help him after she hears a terrible story about the Great War unfolding. They will both travel to London, where Diana will realize how majestic her powers are in the fight against the god Ares, who she believes is the primary instigator of World War I.
Wonder Woman first appeared in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Wonder Woman (2017) is the second live-action film that features her. Its sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, will be shown in cinemas on October 2, 2020.
5. Justice League (2017)
The events of the story follow those of Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. With Superman dead, Batman re-thinks his actions and teams up with Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in search of other meta-humans who will assist them in protecting the world from evil forces. With the help of Aquaman, Flash, and Cyborg, they will stand up to Steppenwolf, a villain who’s in pursuit of three very important artifacts hidden across the Earth.
The film is part five in the DC Extended Universe and a sequel to 2016’s Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. It is also one of the most expensive movies ever produced.
Right before the film’s release, fans started to demand the original version to become available for viewing. Zack Snyder, the film’s first director (until he handed over those duties to Joss Whedon), said in May 2020 that his original cut would have its release on HBO Max the following year, under the name Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
6. Aquaman (2018)
Arthur Curry learns that he is the rightful heir of the underwater realm, Atlantis, being the only son of the Atlantean Queen. However, he also learns that his evil-minded half-brother Orm intends to proclaim himself the ruler of the same kingdom and attack the surface world. Arthur has to become Aquaman and dedicate himself and his powers to stopping Orm’s wicked plan.
The film was a financial success, earning over $1.1 billion across the world, which made it the highest-grossing film based on a character from DC Comics (until then, it was The Dark Knight Rises made in 2012).
On December 16 2020 its sequel, Aquaman 2, will be released; in development is also a spin-off named The Trench.
7. Shazam! (2019)
The story follows the unfortunate and abandoned Billy Batson, while he’s on a never-ending quest to find his mother. What he actually comes across is a wizard named Shazam, who picks Billy to be no other than his personal warrior. Given the superpower of transforming into an adult superhero, Billy will have to confront a serious opponent – Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, who has the powers of the Seven Deadly Sins at his command.
8. Birds of Prey (2020)
The plot takes place four years after the events of Suicide Squad and focuses on Harley Quinn, who has split up with Joker and become even more deranged and unstable. A crime boss Roman Sionis places a bounty on a young girl’s head for stealing an invaluable diamond and it is up to Quinn and three more women (a singer, a detective, and a notorious killer) to get hold of her first.
This is part eight in the DC Extended Universe and a sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad.
